Colbert boosts U.S. speed skating team
(CNN) — Stephen Colbert may have lost his bid as an underdog presidential candidate last year, but he still wants to represent America any way he can.
The “Colbert Report” host said that his viewers. the “Colbert Nation,” will now be the primary sponsor for the U.S. Olympic speed skating team when the squad goes to the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.
The announcement was made on his show Monday night. Earlier, the Netherlands-based DSB Bank in the Netherlands had dropped out as a team sponsor.
“We must ensure that it is America’s 38-inch thighs on that medal platform!” Colbert exhorted.
Bob Crowley, executive director of US Speedskating, said Colbert “embracing the US Speedskating Team will provide immeasurable exposure for our sport and very talented athletes.”
The team has quite the track record, including 75 Olympic medals and such alumni as Dan Jansen, Bonnie Blair and Eric Heiden. It ranks as the most successful of any United States winter sports team.
Donations can be made via www.colbertnation.com or through US Speedskating’s site.

“Fans attending the game were able to purchase an autographed “Mystery Puck” in “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” boxes. Every puck was signed by a Devils’ player, coach, or alumnus, and wrapped individually so the identity was a surprise until after purchase. Net proceeds of the puck sale went to benefit UNICEF.” (via devils.com)
(on a scale of one to adorable the girl in the front sitting down is adorable, and my new bff, Nicole, standing next to me as well)

With the loss of Sheldon Brookbank last season I am having issues picking my new favorite dreamboat Devil.  It’s between a few different guys at the moment.  First up is David Clarkson, he’s very friendly and chatty, Canadian, tall, good hair, has a smart mouth, goes by David not Dave, and isn’t afraid to throw the gloves down, but still has all his teeth.  Also, the story below is too cute for words!

“At the end of the first two periods tonight, Clarkson asked the officials for the puck as he walked off at the Zamboni entrance.

“I always give it to a kid, preferably in a Devils’ jersey,” he said. “It might be that kid’s first game and it wasn’t too long ago that I was in that position, so I like to give a puck to a kid after the periods or after warm-ups.” (via Fire & Ice)
